Peaches Christ is a phenomenon! This larger than life Drag Icon has been enhancing the world with her theatrical performances, innovative events and films for the past two decades. Peaches is based in San Francisco and takes her shows across the planet collaborating with an ever changing cast of drag and counterculture royalty. This self made star is bring her hilarity and wisdom to Never Apart on December 3rd to share her stories and her cult film hit, “All About Evil”. You have been so busy travelling the world putting on your amazing productions! Tell us about some the shows that have been keeping you busy jet setting around over the past few years.

I actually just got back to San Francisco from the U.K. where I was touring with Jinkx Monsoon doing our “Return To Grey Gardens” show and some other stuff.  We’ve been doing the tour for about a month and I wrote the show to really feature Jinkx’s genius impersonation of Little Edie.  Before that we did a run in San Francisco of “Showgirls! The Musical” which was a fully-realized musical version of the movie Showgirls with twenty-two songs, a live band, pole-dancing, and loads of thrusting.  I played Cristal and my big song was “You’re A Whore Darlin'”.  I loved it.

You have been working some with great talents in these productions. Brag about some of the famous Queens you share the stage with.

Jinkx Monsoon and Sharon Needles are two queens I collaborate with a whole bunch, as well as Latrice Royale, Coco Peru, Bianca Del Rio, Heklina, Willam, Katya, Chad Michaels, BenDeLaCreme, Sasha Soprano, and many, many, more.  I’ve been really lucky that I’m able to work with loads of people who inspire me and I get to create shows for them that really showcase their unique talents.
 
You work with Mink Stole a lot and we Love her! Why is she so awesome?

I worship Mink Stole!  I grew up studying her movies and would learn all of her dialogue and to this day will still sit around quoting Connie Marble, Peggy Gravel, Taffy Davenport, and Dottie Hinkle.  Back when my Midnight Mass show was in its earlier years, it was Mink who first said yes to an invitation to come and put on a show with us.  I was beside myself.  She really showed me that we could do bigger shows and invite celebrity guests.  We’ve worked together ever since and she’s become a very dear friend.  

Tell us about your famous Midnight Mass Events and some of your famed guests and highlights!

Midnight Mass is the event I created back in 1998 to celebrate my favorite cult movies through elaborate drag shows and celebrations.  We’ve worked with loads of my favorite cult movie stars over the years including John Waters, Tura Satana, Elvira, Pam Grier, Bruce Campbell, Ricki Lake, Cloris Leachman, Barry Bostwick, Patricia Quinn, and more.  I’m essentially a nerdy movie buff who was able to grow up and live out a fantasy.  It has been a really surreal, strange career and I’m really grateful.

Let’s talk “All About Evil”! How did this film come to be and in a nut shell what can folks expect when they see the film before our talk?

I actually studied filmmaking in college and when I moved to San Francisco after graduating I continued making short films and made a bunch of silly movies that starred Peaches and my friends.  We did a “Tran-ilogy Of Terror” that was three short films that were drag horror parodies and those ended up going to film festivals and stuff so eventually I set out to make a feature film and get a real budget and make something inspired by female exploitation filmmaker Doris Wishman as well as the Herschel Gordon Lewis gore films from the 60’s and 70’s.  It’s a much longer story and I promise to share all the juicy details.  

San Fran has such a strong and unique drag scene. What makes it so special? 

I think it’s always been a very “art for art’s sake” type of scene where most of us did drag first as a hobby and a tool of expression and activism and if it turned into a career, great but if not, that’s ok too.  Much of the scene today is still very reflective of the open-minded hippy mindset of The Cockettes.  If you’re not familiar with The Cockettes you should for sure check out the documentary made about them.

We both worked the Trannyshack stage over the years. Why was this such an important long running institution?

I think that Trannyshack was where I was first able to find a drag family.  To this day my chosen family in SF are people I met at Trannyshack.  I started performing there in 1996, the same year it started and so many of us used the stage as a workshop and a place to find community, challenge one another, and perform for the coolest, most punk rock grunge audience a drag show could possibly have.  It happened on Tuesday nights at midnight.  That could never happen today.  It was magical and very much specific to that time and place.  It was offensive, and rude, and beautiful, and hilarious, and endlessly inspiring.  There probably wouldn’t be a “Peaches Christ” without Trannyshack.

What are some of the things folks can expect from your upcoming Legend Series artist talk? Any trade secrets?

Loads of trade secrets, lots of drag gossip, celebrity stories, and hopefully some inspiration for weirdos looking for that sorta thing from a drag queen filmmaker named after Jesus.  I can’t wait!

Vous avez été si occupée à voyager à travers le monde en présentant vos extraordinaires productions! Parlez-nous de quelques-uns des spectacles qui vous ont gardée autant occupée au cours des dernières années.

Je reviens tout juste du Royaume-Uni où j’étais entre autres en tournée avec Jinkx Monsoon pour notre spectacle Return To Grey Gardens.  La tournée dure depuis environ un mois; j’ai écrit le spectacle pour bien mettre en vedette l’imitation incroyable que Jinkx fait de Little Edie.  Avant cela, nous avons joué dans Showgirls! The Musical qui est une version musicale du film Showgirls présenté à San Francisco. On y retrouve 22 chansons, un orchestre, du pole dancing et beaucoup de déhanchements pelviens.  J’interprétais Cristal et mon grand numéro était You’re A Whore Darlin ou « Chérie, vous êtes une pute ». J’ai adoré.

Vous avez travaillé avec de grands talents lors de ces productions. Vantez-vous de certaines Queens célèbres avec qui vous vous produisez.

Vous travaillez beaucoup avec Mink Stole, nous l’adorons! Pourquoi est-elle si sensationnelle?

Je vénère Mink Stole!  j’ai été nourrie à ses films et j’apprenais toutes ses répliques par coeur. Je continue toujours de citer Connie Marble, Peggy Gravel, Taffy Davenport et Dottie Hinkle.  Lorsque mes spectacles Midnight Mass en étaient à leurs débuts, Mink a été la première à accepter l’invitation à venir collaborer à un spectacle.  J’étais folle de joie.  Elle m’a vraiment montré que nous pouvions voir plus grand et inviter des gens célèbres. Nous travaillons ensemble depuis et elle est devenue une amie très chère.  

Parlez-nous de vos célèbres événements Midnight Mass, de quelques-uns de vos invités notoires et de certains des plus grands moments!

Midnight Mass est un événement que j’ai créé en 1998 pour célébrer mes films cultes favoris par le biais de spectacles de drag et de célébrations de haute envergure. Au cours des années, nous avons collaboré avec des tonnes de mes vedettes de films cultes préférées, comme John Waters, Tura Satana, Elvira, Pam Grier, Bruce Campbell, Ricki Lake, Cloris Leachman, Barry Bostwick, Patricia Quinn et plus encore. Au fond, je suis une cinéphile nerd qui a pu vivre son rêve à l’âge adulte.  Ma carrière a été très surréaliste et étrange et j’en suis vraiment reconnaissante.

Parlons de All About Evil!  Comment ce film a-t’il vu le jour et à quoi peuvent s’attendre les spectateurs lors de sa présentation, qui précèdera notre conversation?

En fait, j’ai étudié la réalisation cinématographique au collège. Je suis partie vivre à San Francisco après ma graduation, j’ai continué à réaliser des courts-métrages et j’ai créé des petits films loufoques dans lesquels Peaches et mes amis tenaient la vedette. Nous avons fait une « tran-ilogie de la terreur » qui était constituée de trois parodies drag de films d’horreur. Ces courts-métrages ont été présentés dans des festivals; j’ai donc décidé de faire, éventuellement, un long métrage avec un vrai budget et inspiré par la réalisatrice de films d’exploitation Doris Wishman ainsi que par les films gore d’Herschel Gordon Lewis parus durant les années 60 et 70.  Je vous résume ici une histoire beaucoup plus longue, mais je vous promets de vous raconter tous les détails croustillants.  

Le monde du drag de San Francisco est vraiment unique et fort. Qu’est-ce qui le rend si particulier?

Je crois que ça a toujours été un type de scène artistique du style « l’art pour l’art », où la plupart d’entre nous faisions du drag en tant que loisir et moyen d’expression et d’activisme. Si ça évoluait en une carrière, tant mieux, sinon, ce n’était pas grave. Une bonne partie de la scène contemporaine a gardé l’esprit ouvert hippie des Cockettes.  Si vous ne connaissez pas bien les Cockettes, vous devriez regarder le documentaire qui a été fait à leur sujet.

Nous avons tous les deux chauffé les planches du Trannyshack au fil des ans. Pourquoi cette institution de longue date était-elle si importante?

Je crois que Trannyshack est le premier endroit où j’ai pu me trouver une famille drag. Jusqu’à ce jour, ma famille choisie de San Fransisco est composée de gens que j’ai rencontrés à  Trannyshack.  J’ai commencé à m’y produire en 1996, soit l’année de son lancement, et nombreux d’entre nous se sont servi de cette scène comme d’un atelier et d’un endroit où trouver une communauté, se stimuler les uns et les autres et se produire devant l’audience la plus punk-rock grunge qu’un spectacle de drag pourrait avoir. Ça avait lieu les mardis soirs à minuit. Ça ne pourrait jamais se produire de nos jours. C’était magique et très spécifique à l’époque. C’était grossier et impoli et magnifique et hilarant et infiniment inspirant. Il n’y aurait probablement pas une Peaches Christ sans Trannyshack.

À quoi peuvent s’attendre les gens qui viendront assister à votre conversation d’artistes pour notre Legend Series? Des secrets du milieu?

Des tonnes de secrets du milieu, de commérages de drag, d’histoires de célébrités et, je l’espère, beaucoup d’inspiration pour les excentriques qui recherchent ce genre de trucs d’une drag queen réalisatrice qui tient son nom de Jésus.  J’attend cette soirée avec impatience!
