Parlez-nous de ce qu’est “Think Outside The Box” et d’où l’idée vous est venue.

Think Outside The Box est une plate-forme créative en ligne basée à Montréal, au Canada dédiée à la photographie émergente et conceptuelle au travers de publications, expositions, événements et conférences. TOTB propose également une sélection de photographies à éditions limités disponibles dans la boutique en ligne. Depuis plus de 5 ans, TOTB cherche et publie le travail de photographes conceptuels émergents rejoignant plus de 87 000 personnes provenant de 45 pays.

Comment décririez-vous cette plateforme et de ce qui vous distingue des autres galleries sur le Web?

TOTB est une plateforme qui veut inspirer et rendre la photographie conceptuelle plus accessible. Nous nous engageons aussi auprès de la communauté en organisant des expositions collectives et en collaborant avec des photographes locaux et internationaux , favorisant les échanges inter-culturels.

Comment avez-vous commencer à travailler avec Benoit Palle?

Nous avons commencé à échanger avec Benoit concernant une publication de son travail sur la page Facebook de Think Outside The Box il y a de ça 4 ans. Ca été une histoire d’amour :). Faut avouer que Benoit est très attachant comme personnage. Nico m’a ensuite présenté son porte folio en me proposant de faire un éventuelle exposition avec l’artiste et qu’il était super intéressé à travailler avec nous! Ça été instantané pour moi aussi.

Comment décririez-vous son travail?

Son travail est spontané, authentique et plein de sens. Quand tu apprends comment il est arrivé à produire un tel ou tel effet, l’authenticité de l’artiste et de sa démarche prennent tout leur son sens. Pour une fois, on regarde une photo qui est véridique à tous les niveaux. C’est comme regarder de la photo documentaire mais super artistique. Parfois on croirais regarder des tableaux.

Pourquoi l’avoir choisi comme première exposition en salle?

Benoit Paillé reçoit beaucoup d’intérêt de plusieurs sites web créatifs. Il à d’ailleurs été nommé comme l’un des 50 meilleurs photographes émergeant de 2015. Il a su developper un style complètement unique et original. Nous voulions débuter notre série d’exposition avec un artiste qui était super attendu de la communauté artistique. Nous voulions lancer la plateforme avec un photographe qui représente bien notre mission.

Pourquoi avoir choisi d’exposer à Never Apart?

Après avoir choisi Benoit Paillé pour l’exposition, nous savions que nous ne pouvions pas lui proposer n’importes quel lieu. Nous recherchions un lieu où l’artiste se sentirait bien. Un lieu qui appuierait et respecterait sa démarche artistique. C’est en allant à l’ouverture du centre en juin dernier que les morceaux du puzzle se sont mis en place.

Quelle est votre expérience dans le monde de l’art?

J’ai étudié plusieurs disciplines dans le milieu artistique en commençant par le théâtre, la littérature, le cinéma et l’art plastique. Je dirige depuis 8 ans une galerie d’art montréalaise et j’ai organisé environ 50 expositions depuis.

Parlez-nous de quelques uns de vos autres artistes et expliquez-nous comment vous choisissez les artistes que vous voulez représenter.

Ca serait trop long, mais je peux vous dire qu’ils proviennent de partout à travers le monde.

C’est en passant de longues heures sur des site comme Flickr ou Behance que Nicolas, le curateur, fait d’abord sa sélection. Quand il découvre un artiste, il peaufine sa recherche afin de voir l’ensemble de son travail pour trouver les images percutantes susceptibles d’avoir un impact sur nos abonné(e)s. La sélection pour la publication est longue; les photos doivent se tenir entre elles. C’est après la publication que nous voyons lesquelles des photos devraient être sur la boutique et je contacte les artistes pour créer la sélection ensemble.

À quoi peut-on s’attendre de “Think Outside The Box” dans le futur?

Il faut s’attendre à des workshops, des pop-ups et des actions majeures dans l’art public, ici à Montréal ainsi que partout ailleurs.

Tell us what “Think Outside The Box” is and how it came to be.

Think Outside The Box is an online creative platform based in Montreal, Canada, dedicated to highlighting emerging and conceptual photography through publications, exhibits, events, and conferences. TOTB also offers a curated selection of limited-edition photographs available in our online store. For over 5 years, TOTB finds and publishes emerging conceptual photographers’ works reaching over 87 000 people from 45 countries.

How would you describe it and what makes you different from other on-line galleries?

TOTB is a platform that aims to inspire and make conceptual photography more accessible. We commit ourselves to the artistic community by organizing collective exhibits and collaborating with both international and local photographers, fostering intercultural exchanges.

How did you begin working with Benoit Palle’?

We started exchanging with Benoit about the posting of one of his pieces on the Think Outside The Box Facebook page over 4 years ago. It really was a love story :). You have to admit that Benoit is such an endearing character. Nico then showed me his portfolio and offered me to eventually curate an exhibit, informing me that Benoit was really interested to work with us! My interest was just as immediate as his!

How would you describe his work?

His work is spontaneous, authentic, and ripe with meaning. Once you learn how he’s achieved a certain effect, his authenticity and process really take on their full meaning. For once, we look at a photograph that is truthful on every level. It’s like looking at documentary photography, but with a super artistic quality. At times, you feel like you’re looking at a painting.

Why did you choose him to be your first gallery exhibition?

Benoit Paillé receives a lot of attention from a variety of creative websites. He was also named one of 2015’s 50 best upcoming photographers. He’s been able to develop a style that’s entirely unique and original. We wanted to start our gallery series with an artist that has a buzz going for him in the artistic community. We wanted to launch the platform with a photographer that really represents our mission.

Why did you choose to show at Never Apart?

After choosing Benoit Paillé for the exhibit, we knew we couldn’t offer him just any old space. We were looking for a space where the artist would feel good. A space that would support and respect his artistic process. After attending the centre’s opening this past June, the pieces of the puzzle really came together.

What is your art world background?

I’ve studied a lot of different artistic mediums, starting with theatre, literature, cinema, and visual arts. I’ve been managing a Montreal gallery for the last 8 years and have organized about 50 exhibits since.

Tell us about some of your other artists and how do you pick who you want to represent?

The list would be too long, but I can tell you that they hail from all around the globe.

Nicolas, our curateur, spends hours on sites like Flickr or Behance to make his first selection. When he finds an artist, he narrows down his search to comb through the artist’s body of work and select striking images most likely to have an impact on our members. The selection for publication is a lengthy process; photographs need to hold their own. Once the photographs have been published, we narrow down which ones should be available in the store and I get in touch with the artists to make the selection.

What can we expect from the future of “Think Outside The Box”?

You can expect workshops, des pop-ups, and major initiatives in public art, right here in Montreal and all over the globe.
