As a teenager I, like so many other alternative queer kids, was obsessed with David Bowie and Klaus Nomi and anything New Wave. I was in absolute awe reading about the innovative artists working in New York and, in that creative group of new talent that I was discovering, was someone named Joey Arias.

I remember watching the film “Mondo New York” for the first time and being entranced by his uniqueness. That documentary acts as a brilliant time capsule, showcasing the many facets of the performance art scene in the Big Apple at the time. From there I learned more about his unique brand of alien chic realness and camp sensibility with movies like “Big Top Pee Wee” where he plays the half man/half woman at the circus. I relished seeing his appearances in films like “Too Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar”, the “Too Funky” music video by George Michael, his photos by Pierre et Gilles and so on.

His reinvention was brought to the world, of course, with the documentary film “Wigstock”. This Hollywood feature captured the 90’s drag explosion via the annual outdoor drag festival put on by Lady Bunny. This is where the “channeling” of Billie Holiday was exposed. The way he can bring out her voice through his own body is beautiful and beyond captivating. It is truly nothing short of remarkable.

I have had the pleasure of working with Joey a couple times over the years. The first visit was in the late 90’s at a club called MaRs where he and his piano player performed a dinner theatre concert. It was such a memorable and special evening. Seeing was believing and this moment solidified my admiration for this sweet, charismatic artist that is filled to the brim with star power! People were astonished by his talent, his stamina and electric energy. He’s truly not of this earth! In 2011, Joey and I connected again with one of our sisters Sherry Vine in a club called Five Sixty. There, the delicious duo performed an action-packed live concert to an adoring audience and, once again, solidified his refined genius.

I have always looked up to Joey as an instigator of free-thinking and expression. Arias continues to inspire and entertain with his magical brand of cabaret. He is nothing short of a living legend and only gets better with time.

We are over the moon excited to have Joey bring his stardust to Never Apart for the 21st installment of Wiggle. This wearable art/runway fashion show/ avant-garde variety show is the perfect excuse to celebrate such a monumental talent. Get ready for your breath to be taken away!

Je me rappelle avoir écouté pour la première fois le film Mondo New York et avoir été envoûté par sa singularité. Ce documentaire agit comme as une fantastique capsule témoin, mettant de l’avant les multiples facettes de la scène de performance artistique de la Grosse Pomme à cette époque. De là, j’en ai appris plus sur sa formule bien particulière d’authenticité chic extra-terrestre et de sensibilité théâtrale avec des films comme Big Top Pee Wee, où il interprète le mi-homme mi-femme du cirque. Je savourais ses apparitions dans des films tels que À Wong Foo, merci pour tout Julie Newmar, dans le vidéoclip de George Michael pour la chanson, ses photographies par Pierre et Gilles et plus encore.

Le monde a été bien sûr été exposé à sa réinvention grâce au documentaire Wigstock. Ce film hollywoodien captura l’explosion du drag durant les années 90 de par le festival extérieur annuel organisé par Lady Bunny. C’est là que le channeling de Billie Holiday fut mis en évidence. La manière dont il arrive à projeter la voix de Lady Day à travers son propre corps est magnifique et captivante au plus haut degré. L’expérience est tout à fait remarquable.

J’ai eu le grand plaisir de travailler plusieurs fois avec Joey au cours des années. La première visite a eu lieu vers la fin des années 90, dans une boîte appelée MaRs où il a donné avec son pianiste un souper-concert. Ce fut une soirée mémorable. Il fallait le voir pour le croire et ce moment a solidifié l’admiration que je porte à cet artiste charmant et charismatique qui déborde de ce je-ne-sais-quoi qu’ont les vedettes! Les spectateurs étaient tous ébahis par son talent, son endurance et son énergie électrisante. Il ne vient certainement pas de cette planète! En 2011, Joey et moi furent réunis à nouveau, et avec Sherry Vine, une de nos soeurs, dans une boîte nommée Five Sixty. Là, le délicieux duo donna un concert endiablé en direct devant un public en adoration et, une fois de plus, confirma son génie raffiné.

J’ai toujours admiré Joey pour l’instigateur de pensée et d’expression libres qu’il est. Il continue d’inspirer et de divertir avec sa version féérique bien à lui de cabaret. Il n’est rien de moins qu’une légende vivante et se bonifie avec le temps.

Nous sommes absolument enchantés que Joey apporte sa poussière d’étoile à Never Apart pour la 21e édition de Wiggle. Cette combinaison de défilé de mode et d’art portable et de spectacle de variétés avant-gardiste est l’excuse parfaite pour célébrer un talent de si grande envergure. Soyez prêt à avoir le souffle coupé!
