Never Again / Plus jamais

Never Again arranges works that refer to touchstones of theatricality and performativity in a labyrinthine fashion, providing audiences the opportunity to explore a maze-like structure. Inspired by post-dramatic theatre sub-genres and video games, viewers are invited to participate in the construction of a narrative through the subjective navigation of the space at hand, which at times makes playful reference to the notion of inaccessibility within theatre. Pieces promote the interdisciplinary nature of the art form for the theatre-makers who stray from traditional and conventional forms, and for the non-theatre artists who touch on the discipline’s constituents. In this sense, Never Again showcases pieces that highlight performativity and foster interaction between the crowd and artworks. Encouraging individual agency repositions spectators during performances which thrive on collective participation. Pieces are situated in the bustling, coming-and-going atmosphere which accompanies such a public event. The event is also the context in which Never Again chooses to celebrate the ephemerality of performance. Exhibited artists experienced the workshopping process favoured by theatre-makers, in which the event is collectively brainstormed and developed, with the “curators” acting as artistic directors.

Never Again rassemble des oeuvres qui font référence à différentes pierres de touches de la théâtralité et de la performativité via l’exploration d’un labyrinthe par les spectateurs et spectatrices. Inspiré du sous-genre post-dramatique et des jeux vidéos, les spectateurs/trices sont invités à participer à la construction d’une narration à travers leur navigation subjective de l’espace; la démarche fait aussi un clin d’oeil à la notion d’inaccessibilité dans le milieu théâtrale. Les oeuvres promouvoient la nature interdisciplinaire de l’art performatif pour les artistes de théâtre qui s’éloignent des formes et contextes traditionnels, et pour les artistes non-théâtraux qui s’intéressent aux concepts de cet art. Never Again met en scène des oeuvres qui insistent sur la performativité et qui favorisent les interactions entre performeur et public. Cette nouvelle autonomie de l’individu redéfinit son rôle de spectateur dans le cadre de performances qui cherchent la participation collective. Les pièces ont lieu dans l’atmosphère animée et transiente qui caracterise l’événement public. L’événement donnera aussi à Never Again l’occasion de célébrer la fugacité de l’art performatif. Avant de présenter leur travail, les artistes ont tous participé à des ateliers, rappelant le processus de création théâtrale ; l’événement y a été repensé et développé de façon collective et les «commissaires» y ont pris le rôle de directeurs artistiques.
